Flood Advisory No.3 of 2023

Present and Expected statusMany parts of the Country have continued to receive substantial amounts of rainfall in the last three days.  According to KMD forecast dated 1st November 2023, the heavy rainfall will continue up until  5th November 2023. The sharp rise in Tana river levels in the last three days has caused flooding in the lower reaches of Garissa and Tana River Counties. Flash floods have been experienced in the upper catchments within Meru County. The lower Athi Basin at the coastal still has also experienced flash floods due to the ongoing rainfall. This is expected to expected to continue due to the ongoing rains. Communities in the affected areas are therefore advised to be on high alert.
River Basins of concernThe areas of concern include the lower Tana at Garissa, Hola and Garsen; Lower Athi at the Coastal strip; Ewaso Ng’iro North including Marsabit, Isiolo  and Samburu Counties.   Others areas of concern are the laggas the Mid Tana basin (Kitui and Makueni Counties) and Ewaso Ng’iro North basin (Wajir and Mandera Counties.) Lower Perkera and Ewaso Narok River at Narok Town; Flood prone areas of Lower Nyando, Lower Nzoia, Lower Sondu, Lower Gucha Migori and the shoreline stream area of Lake Victoria basin.
